Possums & PossiPot FAQs
How do I know that PossiPots won't harm the environment as they degrade?
The PossiPot pots have been tested by an independent laboratory to ensure they do not contain any toxic substances.
What are the pots made of?
They are made from the pulp of bamboo and rice husks. A natural vegetable dye is added to create the colour. The bamboo is gathered as waste product from manufacturers using bamboo to make other products.
How long will the pots last before they disintegrate?
The manufacturer states that they have a life expectancy of at least one year. Field trials underway in New Zealand suggest that it will more likely be a minimum of two years.
What are the skewers made from?
They are made from birchwood that is commercially grown and harvested. The skewers are made from the off-cuts supplied by manufacturers using birchwood for furniture and other products.
Where can I buy the pre-bait attractant and cyanide?
Most rural servicing outlets. PLEASE NOTE THAT YOU CANNOT PURCHASE CYANIDE PASTE WITHOUT A CONTROLLED SUBSTANCE LICENCE. To qualify check out the Guide to Applying for a Controlled Substances Licence published by the Environmental Risk Management Authority (PDF 271 KB).
Possums are known to carry Tuberculosis? Can I catch this disease from handling possums?
Yes, you should always wear gloves and a respirator when working with possums and poisons.
How do I recover the fur?
The most effective way is with a plucking machine and these are available secondhand or new on TradeMe. You may also choose to make your own.
Who purchases the fur?
Many different companies. Probably the best known is Basically Bush however not always the best price so it pays to ask around over the internet.
After de-furring the possum, does the carcass present any danger to any other animals or birds?
Many trappers use the skinned possums for dog tucker after removing the head, tail, claws and paunch. If a carcass is left in the bush it will decompose along with any residual cyanide and is not considered a threat to the environment. If you are taking the possums back to base then the carcasses must be disposed of correctly, either by burying or taking to an organic waste dump. Always check your local bylaws.
